What Is Chengdu Panda Base?
Chengdu Panda Base is the largest giant panda breeding and conservation center in China — and of course, in Chengdu itself.
It’s home to a wide range of pandas, many of which come from different countries around the world.

For me, this isn’t just a famous check-in spot — it’s a genuinely special experience, especially if you’ve never seen a panda up close before.
You get to learn about their behavior and habits, and watch these adorable creatures eat, play, and go about their day right in front of you.
First Impressions of Panda Base
The center is massive. The moment I arrived, I was blown away by how big this place is.
From what I looked up, it spans around 307 hectares and contains multiple zones — the giant panda area, the baby panda nursery, the golden monkey zone, and more.
If you only visit once, there’s honestly no way you’ll cover everything.

We only managed to explore the giant panda area before the day was over. Next time, we’re definitely coming back to check out the golden monkey and red panda sections.
The landscape at Panda Base is genuinely beautiful — fresh air, peaceful surroundings. You’re not just here to see pandas; the whole place has this calming effect that really clears your head.

What Makes the Experience So Interesting?
For me, the best part of Panda Base isn’t just seeing pandas in real life — it’s watching them go about their everyday moments.
It was the first time I’d ever seen a panda eating bamboo in person, using its teeth to peel the bark and munching away happily, completely unbothered by the crowd around it.
Here’s a fun fact about pandas — their daily routine basically revolves around three activities:
- Eating
- Sleeping
- Playing
Honestly, watching them made me want a life as chill as theirs!

The giant panda is the symbol of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and is considered China’s national treasure. You’ll easily spot keychains, bags, and all kinds of panda-themed souvenirs everywhere you go in Chengdu.
How to Visit Chengdu Panda Base
To visit Chengdu Panda Base, you’ll first need to buy an entry ticket on the Klook app. We just bought the basic entry ticket without any add-ons.
You can also buy tickets that include an audio guide or the panda documentary screening — totally up to your personal preference.

A few things to note:
- November to February: Panda Base admits visitors from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, closes at 5:30 PM
- March to October: Admits visitors from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, closes at 6:00 PM
Book your tickets at least one day in advance — last-minute bookings often sell out.
As for getting there, Panda Base is about a 30-minute Didi ride from central Chengdu. Just grab a Didi — it’s the easiest option.
How Many Zones Does Panda Base Have? Which One Should You Visit?
Panda Base doesn’t really have a clean “how many zones” answer on the official website — like 2, 3, or 5 zones.
The place is huge, and the official map shows it as a whole landscape with many viewing points, panda villas, museums, and walking routes rather than being neatly packaged into a fixed number of zones.

That said, the park is generally divided into two main entry areas:
- South Gate: This is the area we visited. As soon as you enter, you’re right in it.
- West Gate: A good option if you want to take a different route or avoid the crowds at the more popular entrance.
If it’s your first time, I’d recommend going in through the South Gate.
The reason: the pandas near the South Gate tend to come out and get active earlier in the morning, while some of the pandas near the West Gate tend to appear later.
Since pandas are most active in the early morning, entering from the South Gate gives you a better chance of catching them eating and playing at their liveliest.
Panda Base also has separate areas for red pandas and golden monkeys, but we didn’t get to either — the giant panda area alone took up our whole day.
Is Chengdu Panda Base Worth Visiting?
For me, yes — Chengdu Panda Base is worth the trip, especially if it’s your first time in Chengdu.
The real value is in the feeling of seeing pandas in real life — a very distinctive experience you can’t easily get anywhere else.

Plus, since pandas are basically the symbol of Chengdu, visiting this place carries a special meaning for the whole trip.
That said, Panda Base will resonate more with people who are genuinely interested in pandas or who want that iconic city experience. If your schedule is tight or you don’t enjoy a lot of walking, this may not be your top priority.
Who Should Visit Panda Base?
In my opinion, this place is best suited for first-time visitors to Chengdu, especially if you’re looking for a truly signature experience of the city.
It’s also more enjoyable for animal lovers, panda fans, or families traveling together.
If you’re on a short itinerary, don’t really care about pandas, or prefer experiences centered around food, old streets, and local life, then Panda Base doesn’t have to be at the top of your list.

For some people, that time might be better spent exploring other parts of Chengdu.
Final Thoughts
Chengdu Panda Base is a place well worth visiting, and it’s a great fit for anyone looking for somewhere to wander, relax, and unwind after stressful workdays.
We highly recommend including Panda Base in your Chengdu itinerary.
What makes this place truly worth the visit is the feeling of seeing pandas in real life — and for me, that alone was enough to make the whole trip more memorable.
